Eugenia glanced at the clock and frowned. She thought she’d been clear that Conlin was to call with an update at three o’clock. It was fifteen after now and she was beyond being upset. Lateness might seem like a minor thing to some, but to her it was a sign. In this case it was a sign that Conlin had perhaps outlived his usefulness. Jackson was announcing his candidacy in forty-five minutes and she needed assurances the Minor girl wouldn’t be a problem.
Why she expected this part of the operation to go any smoother than the rest, she couldn’t say. She’d found out from Burlett that the Minors weren’t who they claimed to be. Before he could pinpoint where they’d been around the time Lucy had given birth, he’d have to first unearth their true identities, which would take longer. For Eugenia his report had only solidified her belief the parents had played some part in what happened thirty-four years ago. They might even have been present at the birth and snatched up the girl right then.
“Is everything okay here?”
Eugenia stowed her phone in her purse and gave Maria a cool smile. While she truly believed Maria was an excellent choice for Jackson’s campaign, she had yet to decide if she could trust her with the Minor matter. Women like Maria collected dirt better than dust rags. The good ones knew when to use the dirt to their advantage. For now she thought it best to hold this particular problem close to the vest. “Everything’s fine. I would hope all is in place for the announcement?”
Maria’s perfectly arched brows rose up her forehead as if in annoyance. “Of course. I wanted to speak with you privately about Beau.”
“Beau will fall in line. I’ll see to that.” She took exception to Maria’s tone. It was one thing for her to express concerns about Beau. She was family after all. Maria wasn’t.
“Actually Hope requested that I, shall we say, give him some space. Apparently he and Jackson had a major difference of opinion over his relationship with Sinead Tisdale. Why Jackson felt the need to discuss it with him is a mystery to me. He should have realized it only serves to give the relationship more importance to someone’s of Beau’s age. We’ll be lucky if he doesn’t run off and get married. Men,” she added with a shake of her head that seem to classify all men as clueless.
Eugenia gave a disapproving sniff. “I myself asked Jackson to speak with the boy. Beau is young and headstrong. It is my strong belief that he needs guidance from his father, and his father alone, at this stage in his life.”
“I see.” Maria smoothed down her knee-length black shirt, looking every inch the successful political consultant she was. “In the future it would be better to run these issues through me. The next month will set the tone for Jackson’s campaign.”
Eugenia gave her a hint of a smile. “I have been around the block a few times, dear .
